December 7th email

Aloha!
Well this week has been an absolute disaster.  No I´m kidding it´s been great as always.  I´ve still Reeve just with a different name and I don´t know how not to have fun, sabe?  So anyways this week we found some awesome investigators namely *******, *******, ********, teachers, evagelists and so forth.  But we have been teaching some really good lessons.  The work goes forth.  We have set a few more baptisms.  I´m getting really good at that part it´s the just the actually getting there that seems to be the set back at the moment.  We have a problem with everyone´s religious leaders talking them out of talking to us.  It´s a dilemna you see because them other people don´t seem to like us much it seems.  Or so I´ve heard.  Word on the street these days.  We had a run in with a baptist minister with some interresting views on our religion.  He told us that Joseph Smith went back to his original denomination before he died.  Interresting.  Im sure you all know why.  But the majority of the people we run into are great.
We were walking just yesterday in fact when we saw one of the people we´d taught previously and had never found again.  But we were already running to an appointment so we let it slide.  It fell.  So we went back and talked to him.  Someone in his family had just died that day and he was in need of comfort.  We taught the plan of salvation.  It is funny how God works.  Strange and mysterious.  For more information view Jacob 4:8.  I think..... Não me lembro agora.
Today we played some basketball.  This week we also got to sing at a stake primary meeitning.  It was a blast and a blast to the past.  It seems just yesterday that I was there myself.  Then I remembered that i don´t know any primary songs in portuguese and that I went to primary in the U.S.
I really miss you all and love you.  Especially during this Christmas season.  My first one away from home.  Sad really.  It´s alright Elder Karren and I will have fun out here.  We always do.
Oh other fun fact.  We had to run to catch so many buses this week.  We would be walking and it would go past.  On Sunday was the big rivalry game between Coritiba Football and Paraná.  Yes Coritiba is spelled right.  and these fans are the craziest in Brazil.  People get killed over these games. So we couldn´t wear red or green ties.  Nothing really exciting happened actually.
Another awesome/spectacular experience.  We were walking through the streets at night and thought^´´let´s go visit these less active members´´ so we did.  We got there and their family was just getting there.  Their extended family we´d never met.  And they asked us to teach them the plan of salvation.  It was spectacular.  Everyone was crying.  They were in desperate need of it.  They asked for us to send missionaries to their houses.  So we don´t get to see the end, but the beginning was worth it.  I love and miss you all.  Thank you for all the support.  I got 7 more letters this week.  My zone is jealous.  What can I say.  Highland, Utah is the place to be from.  Eu te amo e a igreja é verdadeira
Love you too,
Elder Sudweeks
Our Christmas tree brought to us entirely by you

November 30th email

Howdy y´all,
I just want to let you all know that you are the best and the only exceptions.  I received 14 letters on Monday and a package.   So mail does exist down in the southern hemisphere.  I also went to the eye doctor today.  The building was chique demais to say the least.  Up on the 14th floor.  Mother would have loved the view.  Everything is fine there and nothing to worry about.  No changes.  Just a fun little bus ride to the center.  Then to Japan.
This week I did 2 divisions 2 for half a day.  One so Elder Karren could do an interview and the other so he could go to a leadership training.  So high maintenance I know.  The first was with Elder Black again and we helped paint a recent converts house.  Good thing I´ve got lots of practice.  The second I went to Araucária (another city) and I was with Elder Sousa and Elder Andrade.  Both Brazilians.  No trouble really communicating which was good.  We studied, did contacts, and ate lunch.  And rode the bus forever.
Funny story of the week.  So I was singing in the shower Sunday morning at the top of my lungs of course and someone knocks on our door.  No one does that.  No one.  We live behind people so you can´t even do that. Elder Karren goes outside and it´s one of our investigators all ready for church at 7:30.  Excited I guess.  We don´t even know how he knew where we live.  Super funny.  Good thing I don´t get embarrassed.  There´s window in the shower that goes right outside to the front.
We´ve been teaching a lot lately and finding some really intense, awesome, legit, super cool people.  That was for all of you out there reading other missionaries´ letters.  You understand.  We´ve found some families that are really progressing and some single people as well.. We find more every day.. Some really spiritual lessons.  My Portuguese is getting much better.  One problem here is that no one is legally married :/  It´s a barrier, but nothing we can´t handle we´re tough.  (See Alma 26:11,12) Just a little joke there.  So Christmas bells are ringing.  What are they saying to you?  To me they say white Christmas.  Which here means baptisms.....  Just saying.  I love this town
I love you all to bits.  I love you I love you I love you.  I hope that this letter captures my personality.  The church is true.  I know.  Because I personally asked God and he told me so.  And I know that whoever will ask in suas proprias orações will receive the same answer.  Jesus Christ lives and Thomas S. Monson is a prophet.
Love you too,
Elder Reeve T.T. Sudweeks

November 23rd email

Greetings loved ones,
So no mail this week because it´s transfers and I´m going to stay here with Elder Karren.  He goes home next transfer.  January 4th.  Crazy stuff. But one of the Zone Leaders was transferred so we won´t get to see them.  It´s alright though I´m holding out fine.
It´s Thanksgiving tomorrow and we have no plans.  Actually we don´t even have a lunch tomorrow so maybe we´ll do something fun.  We´ve been getting really creative lately making lunches.  We´ve made fried chicken sandwiches with fried onions, lettuce, tomatoes, and ranch dressing that we made.  It wasn´t exact, but it was the best we could do.  We also made lasagna yesterday which was pretty good.  The other stuff was really simple, but we´ve been mixing it up.  We also made cookies again and fudge.  This time for a family home evening that members were bringing their non-member parents too.  The mother came to church and said that she was feeling lost in the desert about life.  Então we shared a message at family home evening.  Lehi´s dream.  Starting with being lost in the desert.  It then transformed into the first vision.  Elder Karren´s idea.  It was very spiritual.  You could cut it with a knife.  The cookies were great too unlike last time.  We have no idea how to translate shortening into portuguese though.  It just comes out as butter.
Another fun fact.  I am exactly 19.5 years old today.  And growing.  Well not really.  Just older.  Soon I´ll be old like Elder Karren. It is also Devin´s birthday this Friday!  17 years old.  I remember those days.  They were good.  So everyone wish Devin a happy birthday.  I wish I could do it in person, but I guess this digital image will have to suffice.  So happy birthay!  Parabens!  I love you, Devin!
This week we did another division.  I was with Elder Black from Washington.  He has been out about 3 months more than me.  It was an exciting day.  There was a lot of looking at the map because we stayed in our area and I´m not exactly an expert at getting around here.  It was good though.  We had some good times.
The langauge is coming though.  Slowly but surely.  I´m understanding better every day.  The speaking is off and on.  That´s usual so I hear.  To answer a question.  Yes we do get the Liahona, but it´s a little delayed and by delayed I mean we just got the January issue.  Just a little.  It´s all good.
Tragic story. Elder Dearinger died today.  He´s currently somewhere up there in the sky.  His family will be able to see the body soon.  And by died I mean he went home.  Probably not on the plane yet though.  I´m sure he´s fine and excited.
Our investigators are great and we´re finding more every day.  We had the most investigators at church in a long time.  We set the record.  A grand total of...2.  Yeah it´s not that exciting, but it was for us.
Everyone also wish Elder Stout a speedy recovery.  I hope he heals speedily.  But nothing stops good ol´ Steve.
Things that I´m thankful for:
1.  My family.  Especially Devin during this holiday celebration season
2.  The gospel
3.  My companion who speaks portuguese
4.  The United States of America
5.  Brazil
6. My friends
7. Investigators
8. Curitiba
9.  Last but definitely not least.  Taylor Powell. We´re best friends.  We do everything together.  She is currently being a great student at BYU.  I sure do miss her.
Well just so you all know for sure I am loving it here in Brazil.  And Im not getting sunburned anymore (knock on wood).  But here is my sun tan after a haircut, my district (none of us were transferred), and our neighbors rabbit they just bought for 5 reis. I hope you all are doing great.  Thank you for all the love and support.  I love and miss you all.  Happy Thanksgiving!
Love you too,
Elder Reeve Sudweeks

Semana 3 - November 16

Opa!
I am understanding people much better and people are understanding me which is exciting.  Today we waited in very long lines so once again we´re short on time.  We never have time for anything.  It´s like running for two years.  Crazy.  I got my first two letters today!  \they were sent the normal way before I even left Brazil.  Yes all mail must go through the mission office which is then given to Zone Leaders who eventually give it to us if they don´t forget.  So it´s a very slow process.  But that´s alright I´m doing fine.  I still have no idea how to use this Missionties thing though.
So this week has been full of exciting stories.  I did my first division with the Zone Leaders.  I went to Tataquara however that´s spelled.  It´s still in Curitiba.  Also this week we taught this super drunk family that we didn´t know was drunk until we sat down.  We taught the Word of Wisdom.  They thought I was Brazilian and then when they found out I wasn´t they told me my accent was better which I´m absolutely positive was the alcohol haha.  We also taught this older man.  They lesson was one of the most spiritual I have ever had.  He told us that he already knew our message was true, but his children would disown him if he joined.  He agreed to meet with us and to even have lessons in the church.  It was Elder Karren´s birthday yesterday.  He is 21 years old now.  So we celebrated with pancakes in the morning.  We also made cookies the night before that ended up way too buttery.  The oven is so had to cook with too because it doesn´t have a rack or any numbers on it.  Solution:  We put a piece of cement inside and guessed on the temperature.  They were alright, but definitely not the best cookies we´ve ever had.  Irma Ana the member that owns our house threw a party/fhe for him.  It was fun.  It has also rained a lot this week so our legs get soaked.  I also got my first blister which is a mile stone for sure.  I’m loving it here though. I love the food so much.  And to surprise you I am alright with hot dogs now.  After 19 long years we finally worked things out.  I have had them a few times here.  Yeah it´s been an adventure to say the least.
Now for crazy stories.  Elder Karren was bitten by a dog that was on the other side of the fence.  He is totally fine.  No blood was drawn because of his layers of clothing.  He was in a lot of pain for a bit though.  Elder Karren also had a 2 liter bottle thrown at him by a drunk.  Really really hard.  We were walking away because we had an appointment and apparently he wanted to talk more and had a very short temper.  It hit him it the back.  We just kept on walking.  He has a mark from it.  He got beat up and old all in one week.  I´m fine though and loving it.  The primary program was this week.  How much did I understand you may ask?  Nothing.  All of our investigators bailed on us to go to church too.  But on Saturday we had a movie night at the church and invited members, less actives, and some investigators.  We watched testaments and it was really good.  It struck up some questions for us to answer.
Thank you all so much for your support.  I love and miss you all.  I hope you are all doing great. Eu te amo e a igreja é verdadeira.
Love you too,
Elder Reeve Sudweeks

Brasil? -November 9th Email

Oi tudo bem?

So for those of you who were wondering...yes my portuguese is getting better.  I can understand the majority of people we talk to.  We have this one investigator who doesn`t have teeth that is impossible to understand.  So lately it has been super hot here.  The weather changes more dramatically than Utah.  I`m officially registered with the Brazilian Police now.  We went and Elder Rios from Highland, Utah was there too.  He is one transfer behind me.  He served in Wisconsin for like a week.  We were in the same Mission Prep class at BYU.
So Brazil is a very different yet similar place.  I could go on and on about the things that are different, but every day they seem to become more normal.  First off milk comes in boxes and doesn`t need to be refrigerated until it is open which is crazy.
We have lots and lots of investigators.  We mark more dates all the time.  But then a lot of the times it`s impossible to find the person again.  And I will tell you I officially know what alcohol smells like.  I cannot tell you how many drunk guys have come up and asked me for a Bible.  Or when we do a contact sometimes you can smell it.  It`s pretty nasty.  Anyways we teach people of all ages.
I have seen quite a few miracles this week.  At the end of the day when we are short on contacts and we are frantically trying to talk to people they just seem to do themselves.  This guy the other day stopped his bike and waited for us to finish talking to another guy and he asked where our church was.  So we told him and he told us he`d been going to the church in New Jersey for 2 years and wasn`t a member.  So we were excited about that. We also got a DVD referral we have been trying to drop off, but they were never home.  So we finally called them and they answered.  We went and were expecting to have to try and talk a bit to get a lesson going, but she let us right in and started pulling all these pamphlets out from missionaries who had previously taught her years ago.  She even had programs from church that were all kept perfectly.  So what did we do?  We taught of course.  I could go on and on about this lady.  She is nothing short of amazing.
The houses here are very interesting.  There are usually a bunch of houses all inside of one wall.  For instance we live in a house behind a members house and we are one of three houses there. And some of the houses are so nice on the inside.  Others..... Let´s just say I`m not sure that they are waterproof.
The sun is so hot here.  I´ve heard from so many Brazilians say that other parts of Brazil are hot, but the sun burns here more.  I`ve started to get a sunburn, but I´ve fought it. I have a watch tan and glasses tan.  It´s pretty funny actually.  I´m getting my haircut today.  Our zone does lots of activities.  Today we studied and played some games together.  Brazil is awesome to say the least.  Oh and I`m pro at the bus system now.  Except I need Elder Karren because I don`t know how to ask or answer questions haha.
We may have a baptism this week.  I`m hoping that we do.  He´s 18 and he has progressed so fast since he got his response.  The gospel is true ladies and gentleman.
If you have any questions or complaints feel free to write me or call me.  Haha yeah you know you can`t call me.  All mail goes through the mission office.  I have no idea after that since I have yet to get anything.  Thank you all for your love and support.  I miss and love you.  Eu amo vocês e a igreja é verdadeira.
Love you too,
Elder Reeve Sudweeks
PS These pictures are of Elder Dearinger and I`s pumpkins.  Me in Brazil with Elders Elias, Karren, and Rave (he used to serve here and is now studying here).  Then me on the largest bus in the world.

First Week in Brazil

[For now, we'll try the blog again, since he's in Brazil.  Also we set up a missionties.com account so that it is easier to write him in Brazil & easier for him to write too.  Basically, we can type letters which are emailed by the company, printed & sent to him locally in Brazil.  He can write letters, send them to the company office there (local postage), his letter is scanned and emailed to us (the user/subuser).  If you would like to use this account, let me know (cesudweeks@yahoo.com).  If you want to write often, I will set up a subuser account for you and he can write back to you directly.  If you just want to write occasionally (which is fine), you are welcome to send me your letter and I can forward it down and any responses back to you. Or you can send it regular mail ($0.98 stamp) which takes about 2 weeks (missionties.com takes about 2-5 days).  The address is on the blog page.

Normally Elder Sudweeks writes to each member in our family a note about this size plus his big email to share.  He must have been very short on time because this is it and no one else got an additional email. -- Claudia Sudweeks]

OI tudo bem?
Just as a note the keyboards here are different and it´s hard for me to type so if I make mistakes I am sorry.  Well I~´ve been here and week and it´s almost summer.  But that doesn´t mean anything here in Curitiba.  For example my first day I was sweating so bad and the next day it rained.  It´s exciting walking and contacting people in the rain.  My legs were soaked.  Last night it was so cold I had to use three blankets and today we wore sweaters.  Until now because it´s sunny now at the end of the day.
So our apartment is very different. First off it´s small.  Then we have termites, the electric shower head, no heating of course, and all tile floors.  I would just have to show you pictures.  I´m totally used to it now.  The window in the bathroom is broken though so taking showers in the morning is pretty cold.  I´m loving it though except for the part where I can understand everything until people talk directly to me then I can`t at all.  I´ve received a lot of compliments on my portuguese but I think I´m getting worse honestly haha.  There´s a lot of walking, but i`ve bee fine there.  The flight here was long and I was so tired.  WE had zone conference this week.  WE went on a bus tour of Curitiba today and got back late so we don´t have time.  I´m serving with Elder Karren from California.  He goes home in January.  WE´re actually in Curitiba in an area called Pineirinho.  It~s great.  I~ll tell you more next week.  I love you all thank you for your support.
Love you too,
Elder Sudweeks

Signing off for now, I think

This is from Reeve's mom:

Due to some concerns that have been expressed about what some have been doing with the contents found in missionary blogs, we have decided that for the time being, we're going to switch to forwarding Reeve's emails.  The Chicago mission has discontinued their blog and after talking with my husband, we think it is best that we do as well at least while Elder Sudweeks is still in the U.S. and then we will decide what to do from there.

If you would like to have his email forwarded to you, please email me at cesudweeks@yahoo.com.

Sorry for any inconvenience.

October 5th, 2001

Ola Irmaos and Irmas!
This week has been exciting to say the least.  I have lots of good news and stories.  First off we've found our Halloween costumes.  They were in our closet.  I'm going to be a storm trooper and Elder Dearinger is going to be Pikachu.  They're pretty good costumes.  Perhaps we'll take some pictures.  I sure hope I'm still here for Halloween because I don't want to miss our 3 baptisms coming up on the 22nd!  Yes I know it's a miracle.  I will tell you more about these in a second.
General Conference was amazing of course.  It was very inspired.  I can tell you that it is a great thing to have non-member watch.  I have witnessed it first hand.  So we watched the first session of conference with some Less Active members.  I noticed that it seemed to have a theme of personal revelation.  All of conference did.  As well as missionary work (so I challenge you all to help out your missionaries and make their lives easier and things happen.  Our Mission President has been highly focused on Member Work the last couple meetings.  We need to work with Members every chance we get).  But the T's have a non-member living in their house.  He watched with us and started asking questions.  It was good for us as you can imagine.  We watched the second session at a part member family.  I talked about them last week.  The L family.  M L is in her 80's and is having health problems.  So we go and do service for her every week.  She lives with her daughter M (same name)  Who is not a member.  Yes it's confusion I know.  And M Jr.'s niece lives there too.  She is 9 and her name is M (different name) and not a member.  She is T's daughter.  So we watched with all of them and T who was the golden referral we talked about.  Afterwards we ate dinner with them.  They loved conference they ate it up.  Especially T.  But we had to teach another appointment so we had to run after dinner.
Then we attended the priesthood session which was focused on missionary work.  I really hope that lit a fire under you all because we're pretty pumped up out here.  I can tell you that there is nothing better than serving a mission.  The young men there were pretty excited too.  But on Sunday we went and watched with some members in the morning.  Our ward mission leader.  We ate a fabulous lunch with them  Ribs.  Absolutely delicious.  They left the TV on between sessions and up pops a special on Elder Norton.  Now Elder Norton was not Elder then, but he was in my MTC Zone.  He became the new Zone Leader after we left.  Great Elder and it was surprising and cool to see him on TV.  Probably not as exciting for you. He should be leaving the MTC this next week.
The Sunday second session we watched at the T's again.  Afterwards we rushed to teach the L.  They watched all the sessions and they were really touched.  Theresa really love Bednar.  Now we hadn't taught about the angel Moroni yet so she was very interested in that.  (Side note I don't know about you all, but I sure thought of my Mother during his talk on family history).  We taught  the first lesson to all of them.  The First Vision story was so powerful.  They all committed to being baptized on the 22.  Only M and M are in our ward, but T is getting baptized too.  The spirit was so strong you could cut it.  I have never felt the spirit like I have when someone realizes for themselves that it is true.
I'll spread out the miracles here.  I guess this is still a miracle though. So the early weeks of my mission we had problems with having dinner appointments.  This week was the opposite.  We had 2 dinner appointments multiple nights this week.  It was crazy and I don't know how it happened.  I have been so full all week.  One night 3 people called us asking if we were going to come to dinner that night.  We accepted most of them because they were all part member families.  I had some crazy connections with members this week though.  Last Wednesday night we went to dinner at the S's house. After we ate Brother S pulls out his Mission Scrapbook.  Which isn't too weird I mean we remind him of his mission.  So he opens it and points to a picture.  And lo and behold I'm staring at Ray Sudweeks (my uncle) in the MTC.  Brother S served in Korea.  My Uncle Ray was working at the MTC while he was there.  The next night we go to the C's for dinner. And they used to live in Eagle Mountain, Utah.  So I told them that my cousins lived there and we discovered that my Uncle Rick was their Bishop.  We talked about more than that, but it was crazy that two nights in a row people knew my dad's siblings.  She sent my Aunt a message on Facebook while we were there.
Next miracle.  Yesterday we received a referral from the church for a free Bible.  So we went to give it to C.  He accepted it very graciously and invited us in to teach him.  First off people don't just say, "Teach me".  So we went in and taught half of the first lesson.  He accepted to be baptized on the 22nd.  He invited us to come teach his family later this week.  That was the craziest most exciting moment of the week.  There are people ready for the gospel and we don't even know it.  All because he saw on his phone online that he could get a free Bible.
I'm sorry that this is so long it's just been an awesome week.  We're working hard and I hope you all are too.  Keep up the good work.  The gospel is true and I'll see you in two.
Love you too,
Elder Sudweeks

[And he sent this addition]
Oh on Monday Elder Dearinger had a leadership training meeting so I was sent to be a Spanish Elder In Woodstock.  It was a pretty fruitful day.  We found quite a few people to teach.  I taught lessons in and contacted in Spanish.  It was intense.  My Spanish is terrible.  I have a hard time not using Portuguese words or pronunciation.  I got to talk in Portuguese to my companions all day though. It was a good experience.
Oh I also forgot to mention that our investigator D got married on Saturday so he should be getting baptized next week!  The work is moving forth and the area is on fire.

Didn't get transferred this time

[Due to some concerns that have come to our attention about people inappropriately taking names of investigators from blogs, I will only post initials, which might be slightly confusing.  But I'm opting for safety.]

Ola!
Yeah I'm shaking things up this time.  So this last week has been pretty good.  We got a hold of some investigators who we haven't been able to get a hold of for a while.  We had a couple investigators bail on us with church again, but we're working with it.  So the exciting news from this week is I had my first two baptisms! It was such a cool experience.  I'll try and attach a picture.  We'll see if will let me.  M and H were baptized by Elder D on Saturday and confirmed on Sunday.  It was such a cool experience.  M (as he prefers to be called) had a sweet 3 piece white suit.  He wore it to church too.  I ended up giving an on the spot talk at the baptism on baptism and the Holy Ghost.  There was such a cool spirit there.
We were also excited because it got Brother Q-who is not a member-to come to church and feel the spirit at the baptism.  We watched the Restoration while we were waiting for them to change and you could see the spirit working on him.  Hopefully he'll be open to learning from us.
So on Sunday in our first block of church our investigators bailed on us.  So we got roped in as we were walking to class to help in the nursery for a few minutes.  I ended up sorting out a fight over a dump truck and getting proposed to.  I could hardly understand what she was saying at first, but it made me laugh after I figured it out.  I also discovered that Elder D is an extremely good artist during coloring time and that's not a joke.  Elder D and I also received bracelets from our ward mission leader's daughter later that day.  She's ten.
Another noteworthy accomplishment is that we're getting our Russian friend to read the Book of Mormon and Elder D beat him in chess.  I still lost this week, but it was an accomplishment for him.  We're working with him which is great.  He's keeping his commitments.  Oh and I beat Elder D.  V--that's his name--said he's taking us to get Chinese food for lunch next time.  It's different teaching him. We mostly have him talk and he ends up feeling the spirit as he reads and talks about it. He's coming along.
My companion signed up for the ACT next month.  We'll see if I'm still here then, but we'll see what I end up doing during those four hours.  It should be exciting.  It feels like I've been through all this before.  Speaking of schools according to our sources BYU won this week!  That's exciting news.  We ate dinner at a Ute fan's house the other night which was a good ol' time.  They're an awesome family and so willing to help us out which is cool.  Offered their home for lessons and everything.
We've been working hard out here.  It's been cloudy, rainy, and a little cold this last week so I had to buy a sweater.  It's alright now though.  We've been meeting lots of new people every day.  It's just like those stories you hear where you ask for their number and they'll just say, "I'll call you".  Frustrating, but it's alright we're not getting down on ourselves.  We're having a lot of success too.  We're just working on getting people to say yes to--not the dress--baptism.  It's a scary word to some people.
So cool spiritual experience of the week.  We went to teach M daughter of M [They have the same name].  M Sr. is a member, but she is very old and can't really get around.  She live with her daughter who is not a member.  We went to teach the daughter who wasn't there, but here sister T was.  So we talked to her and taught the first lesson and she committed to baptism on the 29th of October.  It was such a cool experience. She just soaked it all up.  She was ready and we didn't even know we were going to teach her.  The spirit was so strong.  Unfortunately she doesn't live in our area so we passed her information on to other missionaries.  That was the most golden referral they will ever get.  She came with a baptismal date.  We'll get to teaching M (Jr) and M (who is the daughter that is 9) this week hopefully.  We're pretty excited.
On a less exciting note I was fed hot dogs again.  It's getting to be kinda funny now.  My companion makes fun of me.  Oh and I forgot to mention that M showed up right as we were leaving and agreed to watch conference with us and feed us lunch so we are teaching her then.  It should be great.  God works in mysterious ways.  I hope you are all excited for Conference because we are.
We also fed squirrels with our Russian friend this week.  They grabbed them out of our fingers as we tried to set them down.
Well I miss and love all of you.  Thank you for all the support.  I hope to hear from all of you.  Oh and pray for Elder Worton.  India's rough.  My roommate served there and he had a hard time in the beginning too, but he ended up loving the food and culture.  And please write Elder Stout, Elder Proctor, Elder Graham, Elder Sharp, Elder Buhler, and Sister Proctor.  Missionaries need the support and letters.  I hope you are all doing well.
Love you too,
Elder Reeve Sudweeks

Week 3 done

Oi!
Everything is going here in the lakey, mountainless land.  It's been an exciting week.  So I told you we had a goal of 60 lessons.  Well that's combined with all the different types of lessons including actives, less actives, recent converts, and investigators.  We totaled up at 57.  So we were a little short, but I'm pretty sure that's a new record.  We're going to wait try again because this week has been a little different.  We've been working hard, but the numbers aren't as impressive.
On Monday we had Zone Conference in Chicago which was good.  It was a nice drive out there in a 12 passenger van full of missionaries.  It was not comfortable in the slightest.  We lest at 6 AM and got home around 6 PM.  It was long, but good.  So yes I was in Chicago at the same time as Elder Worton.  We talked about a talk given on the four different types of missionaries.  We want to be number four missionaries.  I can't remember the exact talk. We got home though and our dinner canceled so we made our own then went and taught a lesson to the Qs.  Two of their children are being baptized this Saturday.  My first 2.  We're still working on the father, but the family has become a lot more active and they are participating in all the ward activities.  Hopefully things continue to head uphill.  Needless to say we are really excited for Saturday.
So last Saturday we went to help C with her horses again, but she wasn't expecting us so we just worked by ourselves.  We cut down weeds, cleaned stalls, cleaned horses' manes, and all that jazz.  C told us that her and her son would be coming to church...but they didn't.  We're still trying.  Life is full of ups and downs.  Sunday we went and played chess with our 89 year old russian friend and taught him a lesson.  We let him borrow Elder Dearinger's russian copy which was cool that we had that.  He said we were the best missionaries he'd ever met which was quite the compliment.  I'm pretty sure it's mostly because of Elder Dearinger and the fact that he speaks Russian.  But he really opened up to us and he said that he would start reading which his brother has been trying to get him to do for years.  IT was a great experience.  I am learning so much especially from Elder Dearinger.  His parents just got his flight plans.  He will be flying home on November 23 my half birthday.  We're trying to make his last couple weeks worth it.  We're working hard.  He will have served an extra 3 weeks and make in home just in time for Thanksgiving.
The most exciting and funny part of the week was when we were knocking doors we were talking to an 18 year old girl on her porch and things were going well.  Then she started getting distracted looking past us and there was a parking cop car.  Elder Dearinger told us that was our back up and she believed us.  Yeah so someone called the cops on us and we had to give them our information.  Nothing really happened, but it was pretty funny.  Then we went to dinner.
Another exciting fact for you.  We were teaching a lesson outside yesterday and I lost my watch tan line and replaced it with a glasses tan line which is pretty nice if I do say so myself.  I'm having a blast out here and I'm working hard.  I am so tired every night so I sleep great.  We also started P90X that we borrowed from a member so I'm really sore.  Elder Dearinger finds it easy.  We have a good time laughing at how tired I get.  In the end I'm practically falling on the floor.  He took some pictures of me failing.
My testimony is really growing so much and I know that Jesus Christ lives.  Joseph Smith was a prophet of God called to restore this church.  I hope you all read your scriptures every day and feel the power that they bring. I love you and all and miss you.  Thank you for all the support you give me.
Love you too,
Elder Sudweeks
PS Thank you, Mother, for the fill in the blank letter.  I found it quite funny.  I will be better about writing and answering questions. [I sent him a list of questions with answers he could circle along with an addressed, stamped envelope because there are some businessy kinds of questions I ask over and over and haven't gotten a response.   I knew he would find my new approach entertaining. :) ]

A real missionary

14 Sep 2011

Oi tudo bem!
So I'm a real missionary now.  Let me explain.  First off I have a missionary tan.  I even have the watch tan line.  Needless to say I'm pretty excited about that.  I would also like to point out that I have about every stereotypical missionary story there is so far.  We have the eternal investigator, the golden investigator, the gross food you have to eat politely, your crazy people, teaching a preacher, teaching a Jehovah's Witness, teaching a Biblical scholar, getting chased by dogs, teaching Muslims, teaching Hindus, etc.  All in two weeks.
First off in two week I have been fed hot dogs by four families.  Yeah it's been rough, but I'm sticking it out.  One of them was chili dogs and Elder Dearinger had never even heard of a chili dogs before.  He said they were "interesting".  I drowned mine in chili so I couldn't taste the hot dog.  But when you're walking all day and starving you'll eat anything.  This week has also been full of knocking doors.  I think we totaled up the hours and it came to about a day and a half.  We've found quite a few people though.  It was such a cool experience.  Just yesterday we were going house to house and this guy in his mid 20's told us he'd been praying to know how god wanted him to follow him.  We're going back to teach more.  I'm not sure how it will end up, but it's was testimony building knowing that every day we pray before we go out and we were an answer to someone's prayer.
This week we are shooting for 60 lessons.  It's a lofty goal, but we know that we can do it.  For those of you at home.  That's 3 times what we're expected to teach.  Now this is not to brag it's to show you how good our area is.  Right now we are on track.  It's going to be tricky though with our upcoming schedule.  We have a baptism planned for next week which is exciting.  It's next Saturday.  I'll probably tell you more about that next week.  We went back and helped with horses again last Saturday.  Let's just say I'm practically a cowboy now.  Yeah I know you're jealous.  I would be too. C is coming along and her son is moving in and he's interested too which we are excited about.  There are so many people ready for the gospel.  We all just have to find them.  I never realized this fully before I came out.  We all can be better missionaries.  and so many people are interested because of examples.
So I'll tell you about D.  Now D is the best investigator you can think of.  To start off he called us before we'd ever met him and asked to be baptized.  There you have it.  So we went to teach him and he was already reading the Book of Mormon.  He also knew about the law of chastity so he and his girlfriend are getting married so he can be baptized.  He didn't know anything about Joseph Smith so we taught him that and it was so spiritual.  He told us his life story and let me just tell you it was rough.  He never knew his father, his step dad beat him so he was taken by the government, and I could go on.  Recently he started attending churches to know which one to join and he came to our church and felt the spirit so strong he knew it was true.  I could go on and on about how great D is, but what the point is that there are so many people who are ready.  We just need to share the gospel with everyone.  Members have the duty to be examples to their friends and it's so much easier for the missionaries when they have referrals to visit.
I've got to say that Elder Dearinger is amazing.  I wish you could hear him talk to people.  People will talk to him for so long on their doorsteps.  I don't know how he does it so well.  Hopefully someday Ill have that quality.  I'm working hard for it.  I wish I could tell you everything that I do and you could just see the miracles I've seen.  There is no doubt in my mind that Joseph Smith was a prophet.  The Book of Mormon is true and Jesus Christ lives.  I have encountered so many questions out here that I'd never even thought of before, but it only strengthens my testimony.  We honestly can't answer all of them.  That is why faith is the first step to everything.  I've been reading around Alma 36 recently.  I challenge all of you to read starting with Alma 34.  I promise that you will feel the spirit.  I love you all and thank you for your support.  I hope to hear from you all soon. Eu amo voces e a igreja e verdadeira.
Love you too,
Elder Sudweeks

Week 1 (in the Illinois Chicago Mission)

Oi!
Everything is going great here is Illinois.  I'm having a blast.  I've already picked up some great stories.  We have quite a few investigators.  We're trying to get more though.
The first day out I taught my first lesson.  Her name is Tina and she agrees with what we're saying, but isn't sure she wants to act on it.  It was our first lesson with her.  Elder Dearinger asked her to be baptized 3 times and she said no all three.  We also had coordination meeting that night which was really confusing for me because I didn't know anyone we were talking about.  I still have no idea where anything is which is an adventure.  Elder Dearinger has it all figured out and he has his gps which is nice.
On Thursday we played some basketball with this christian group really earlier and we taught a lesson.  They had a discussion about James 3 and how we should bridle our tongues.  It seemed to be a little aimed at us and the members there with us.  It was kind of funny.  It was a pastor-I can't spell-leading the discussion.  After that we did our study times.  Don't worry we started them on time.  Like I said it was early.  Then we had our weekly planning.  After that I had a little better grasp of what was going on. We had a lesson cancel on  us, but we rescheduled.
We then taught an inactive member named Steve.  He is awesome, but is really going through a hard time and has to work on Sundays.  His wife isn't a member and is from Russia.  Elder Dearinger had fun talking to her in Russian, but she says she prefers english.  Elder Dearinger was a little offended because she kept ragging on Russian/Ukranian food and culture and that kind of stuff.  He didn't react though he kept his cool.  They have a little boy who just started kindergarten.
Our next lesson also cancelled on us so we went and contacted referrals.  Both ended up being very strong born again Christians.  That was intense.  They were not open to listening to what we had to say and could not understand the concept of works to accompany faith.  They especially did not like the Book of Mormon.  Neither one would let us in.  We just talked to them through the door.  And let me tell you it was hot.  100 degrees plus humidity.  Well one lady just really wanted to Bible bash, but we just ignored that.  The other had a Mormon friend who told a bunch of deeper doctrine and she did not want anything to do with us.  They were both good Christian people though.  Just not ready for us.  They people here are great.  There are a lot of Born agains though which makes it a little harder.  They don't like the authority thing.  We had dinner that night at a less active family's house.
After that we taught another lesson to another less active, part member family.  The mother and two older kids are members.  They also have twin nine year olds who aren't members so we taught them and really the whole family the 3rd lesson.  We invited the father to join, but he didn't want to.  I think he was secretly listening from the kitchen though.  They fed us ice cream which was great for how hot it was even though it was practically dark outside.
On Friday we taught Shawn.  Shawn has a member girlfriend who is on a mission in California.  He was in the Marines and is very strong willed.  He is very receptive to the gospel, but he says he won't agree to anything until he finishes the Book of Mormon.  He is in the war chapter and reads one or two chapters a night.  We tried to speed him up a little, but he says he prefers to take his time.  We're working on that.  Trying to explain that you don't need to know everything to know it's true, but he says he made himself a promise and he's going to keep it. He also works on Sundays and can't come to church.  Needless to say he rejected our baptismal invitation.
After Shawn we taught Grace and Russel.  I won't get to detailed about them, but they make me laugh so much.  Grace is 87 and just does not stop talking.  It's so funny.  Her son is in his forties.  Russel is legitimately crazy.  We're not sure how, but if I explained you would understand.  We have some good stories.  We taught them a combination of the first and third lesson.  She said she'd think about Baptism.  Russel said he doesn't like going to church and is fine with his church through the mail.  They spent about 20 minutes telling us about their friend Merve who is crazy and never lets them talk.  It was really ironic.
After lunch on Friday we went to go knock doors, but as we parked the car, said a prayer and got out we discovered we had a flat tire.  So we spent 2 hours waiting to get it fixed because it apparently is a reoccurring thing.  There weren't any houses nearby so we tried to talking to people in nearby stores which didn't really work.  I found this crazy Bible children's book.  The story of Adam and Eve was all out of order.  Apparently Adam was created on the third and sixth day.  Before birds, fish, or animals the first time actually and before the sun too.  The moon was already there.  Well so since that wasn't working we decided to do language study.  So there we were in the middle of Pepboys reading the Book of Mormon in Portuguese.  So we finally got our car back and went to coordination meeting for the other ward.  We then had dinner with the Searle family.  They are members and from Layton.  They have lived here 3 years.  They have a 19 year old daughter who wasn't there, a 6 year old, and a 4 year old.  They little kids were so excited especially to see Elder Dearinger.  We played with them while we waited for the pizza to be finished.  It reminded me of good old times back in North Carolina except with reversed roles.
After dinner we tried to contact two more referrals and knock doors, but since it was Labor Day weekend everyone was gone.
Saturday we did service for an investigator named Claudia.  We went and cleaned horse stalls and helped her move her new horses.  She has 22 horses and runs a breeding program.  She is really nice and was almost baptized once, but then was offended.  She says she's too busy for church so we're going to make time by going and helping out once a week.  She says she'll probably go next week because her son is coming and he's interested.  This is really exciting for us.  She's in her 60's and taking care of all these horses by herself.  She also trains dogs.  She is one tough woman.  After our service project we went to have dinner at the Trudeau's house.  They are less active members and we had chinese food.  It was delicious and we really got to know them.  They said we were welcome any time.  We went down in their basement which was full of cats and an entire gym.  They had all the nicest professional equipment.  and a tanning booth which I thought was hilarious, but it got Elder Dearinger really excited.  He's in to that kind of stuff.  But like I mentioned it was full of cats.  And I'm fairly sure I am allergic to cats now because that plus the combination of the hay and dust from the service project was making my eyes go crazy.  It's alright though they calmed down after a little bit.  And now my eyes aren't even red which is a miracle.  After dinner we went to contact referrals, but they weren't home.
My first Sunday in the field was good.  Just like my first Sunday in the MTC it was fast Sunday.  Which isn't hard because you're busy all day.  So went to 2 wards.  One at 9 the other at 1 with an hour in between the 2.  They were both great.  After the first Sacrament meeting we were asked to teach primary.  I thought we should probably do something else, but we ended up doing it.  The kids were about 5 and not very cooperative.  There was 4 girls and one boy.  The little boy did not want to listen to anything.  Which is expected, but we did manage to teach them the sacrament promises through much repetition.  During the 2nd ward Elder Dearinger pulled me up to the stand and we did a double testimony.  We were up at the same time.  It was interesting, but it was cool and powerful.  I've never seen anything like it which is also what a lot of people said.  We had 5 investigators at church and they all had people they were with.  2 of these investigators were not planned.  Other people brought them and they wanted to hear more.  They were both teenage girls.  One came with her grandma and the other came with her friend.  Her name is Mary and is she about 18.  She is very interested and has lots of questions.  One of the young women brought her. We are so excited to start teaching both of them.  After church both of our lessons cancelled so we went to dinner at the Olsen's again.  Only Tyler was there, but he made us a nice dinner.  Afterwards we went and knocked doors.  As we were knocking some of the priests from the ward were driving by so they decided to come with us.  It was pretty cool.  No one really wanted to hear more except the last house we did.  He is a comparative religions major and has actually read the Book of Mormon.  But only for a class.  We're not sure what his motives behind receiving lessons is, but we know the spirit will touch his heart.  He studies ancient hebrew and all sorts of languages and he is very smart.  He uses grammatical words Elder Dearinger doesn't know.  That morning I had this impression I needed to go grab my oil out of my bag so I did.  During the hour break one Sister came up and asked for a blessing because of an accident she'd been in.  It was nothing big, but it was a cool experience for me that was testimony building.
On Monday it was Labor day.  We started the day off with study of course then went to District meeting.  It was good.  Elder Dearinger is the District Leader so he taught the lesson on listening to the spirit and asking better questions.  Our district has been struggling a little bit, but they all are great Elders. After district meeting we went the ward picnic with some of our investigators.  We played volleyball and softball.  Volleyball ended though when the young men's leader landed wrong and broke his ankle.  It was very sad.  He was rushed to the hospital.  We knocked more doors then had dinner with one of the ward mission leader's family. It was BBQ.  I would like to point out that I ate 2 hot dogs.  They were covered in ketchup and onions, but I was so hungry it was the best Hot Dog I ever had.  I still hate hot dogs though.  He served his mission in Brasilia so we spoke a little portuguese.
Yesterday we played really early morning basketball.  We woke up at 5:20.  It was fun, but Elder Dearinger did a lot better than me.  We taught a lady named Lisa for about 3 hours.  She is a very strong Christian, but does not believe in one correct path.  That's pretty much what everyone says around here.  She said she really felt the spirit.  We'll see how that goes.  We also taught 5 more lessons yesterday, but I've already written too much.  Sorry it's so long.  I'm having a great time out here and I love you all.  I hope to hear from you soon.
Love you too,
Elder Reeve Sudweeks
PS I've received 2 letters that were sent 8 days before I got them.

Letter from President & Sister Doll - Illinois Chicago Mission

Dear Brother and Sister Sudweeks ... we wanted to let you know that Elder Sudweeks arrived in Chicago safely last Tuesday, and we also wanted to give you the link http://vimeo.com/28546255 to the video that was taken of the missionaries in his group during their first 24 hours.  We have attached a photo of Elder Sudweeks with his companion Elder Dearinger and President Doll and myself.  We hope you enjoy sharing in his first day in Chicago!

First Day [P Days in Chicago are Wednesdays]

Oi!
I'm finally in the field!  It's really exciting and almost doesn't feel like it's real.  The plane ride was really good.  I sat next to a member who lived in Chicago, but is going to school at the U.  He flies every week.  He is getting his PhD in Public Affairs or something like that.  I flew with 2 Elders and 3 Sisters.  I spent the next while with them.  Right as we got off the plane we met President and Sister Doll.  Straight afterwards we put our bags in the truck, they left, and we took the Subway.  I passed out my first Book of Mormon to Rob.  Rob is 21, starts school  next week, sells sun glasses at the airport, his parents are Catholic, he likes to run, ran track in High School, has lived in Chicago his whole life, really enjoys to read, and has family in Utah.  He said he'd been to our giant, Mormon "church" in Salt Lake.  So I explained that was the temple. He said it was so impressive.  I told him there was one in Chicago and he thought that was cool.  He asked me some questions about the Book of Mormon I was holding, what I was doing here, why, and I told the First Vision story and how the Book of Mormon came to be.  He accepted my challenge to read 3 Nephi 11.  I wasn't amazing and I can't wait to improve, but it was a really cool first 30 minutes in the mission field.
Next we went and ate pizza which was delicious and super filling.  I hadn't eaten all day.  After pizza we got a tour of Chicago and took pictures.  The AP's filmed a lot of stuff and said they'd send it to you.  That should be exciting.  There are so many random things in that city.  Afterwards we went to the Mission Office and had some orientation.  I picked up my letter from you mother which was very nice.  They said they prefer mail to go through the Mission Office because of transfers and things like that, but if you want my address it is 200 S. Hwy 59th Ingleside, IL 60041 Apt 109.  You can figure out how to write that. So after the Mission Office we went to the Mission Home.  We got to eat dinner with President and Sister Doll and the AP's.  Afterwards we had our interviews and we went to bed.  It's a really nice house and President and Sister Doll are so nice.  Especially Sister Doll.
Today we woke up and did a few chores.  Then we ate breakfast and left for more orientation at the Stake Center.  I met my Trainer.  Elder Dearingen from Ukraine.  He was raised in an orphanage until a few years ago when he was adopted into a family here in the Washington.  Somewhere near Spokain.  He has 12 siblings and he is the 2 oldest.  He speaks Ukrainian, Russian, English, and wants to learn some portuguese.  He is very organized and is so on top of things.  Apparently we teach more than any other part of the mission.  I'm in Lakevilla, Illinois.  Our apartment is pretty nice.  It's just the two of us, but right behind our apartment is a pond.  We have a car.  We in a much nicer part of town.  We also have a dishwasher which is really cool.  I have to by a cheap blanket and pillow today though.  I'm not sure how I'll do on letters though.  I may be switching to mostly emails.  Elder Dearingen says we have lots of investigators.  They taught 40 lessons last week and his goal is 60.  Apparently the members feed us dinner every night.  We cover two wards.  We also get free laundry and bread.  Some member brings us bread every week.  I'm really excited.  We have a coordination meeting tonight and I think we may teach. I'm not sure yet...  The Church has started this new program for new missionaries.  There is this book we follow for the first 12 weeks.  We have 2 hours of companionship study every morning.  I'm not really sure what it's like yet.  Or what my schedule is at all actually.  Truthfully, I have no idea where I am right now.  I have no idea what part of the state I'm in.  I'm excited to be here though.
I really appreciate all of your support.  I was so good to talk to you on the phone yesterday.  I have no idea how long I'll be here.  I'm just going to treat this like it's my final destination until then.  I did get two emails from the Curitiba mission this week though which was weird.  They're entirely in Portuguese.  I think I may try and learn some Russian from Elder Dearingen.  Apparently we have a Russian investigator.  He'll pretty much do all the talking there.
Chicago has lots of spanish speakers.  i hear them everywhere.  unfortunately no Portuguese really.  We'll see I guess.  One of the AP's, Elder Castillo, I think was one of McCade Powell's companions.  Him, President and Sister Doll say hi.  They all spoke very highly of him.  They said he was one of the best  I love you all so much and I miss you.  I can't wait to hear from you all.  You are all so important to me.  I can't wait for my first lesson.  Eu amo voces e a igreja e verdadeira.
Love you too,
Elder Reeve Sudweeks

Last Day in the MTC.

Oi!
Eu estou muito animado hoje.  Today is my last p day and day in the MTC.  I'm way excited for everything tomorrow.  I have to be in the Travel Office at 5 in the morning though.  My flight leaves about 8:40.  I get to call in the airport which is way exciting.  Chicago is really exciting.
So we all guessed this week where we were all going.  I was the only one right on any of them.  I guessed Sister Ricks was going to Billings.  And she is along with Elder Morrey (my companion), Elder Hutchins (my old companion), and Sister Smith.  They are all really excited.  Elder Freeze and Elder Chavez are going to Philidelphia--however that's spelled-- Pennsylvania.  They are really excited too because apparently there is a portuguese branch there.  Elder Head was reassigned to Philidelphia too, but he when he went to pick up his travel plans they said Brasilia on them.  He got his visa that day so he's going straight down.
Speaking of visas I just got to do my online portion. [We, his family, are very excited for this answer to prayer.]  I was so excited and am so excited about that.  They called my name over the intercoms.  It was really exciting.  I can't wait to get down there.  Elder Head did his online 4 weeks ago.  [One of the sisters did hers 2 months ago and still hasn't gotten the final visa, so we'll see how soon Reeve's comes.]  But it's really random on the time so I have no idea how long I'll be in Chicago.  One exciting fact about Chicago I quite enjoy is that Frank Sinatra sang about it.  He didn't sing about Jacksonville, Florida now did he?
The MTC is great.  These week has been really different with In-Field orientation and what not.  Getting our reassignments was an adventure as well.  We went in at the normal time people get them and they weren't there.  So we waited an hour and went back.  They weren't there still so we sat there for 45 minutes waiting.  (We didn't have anywhere to be because our schedule was different because of Hosting) and they didn't come in.  So we went and Hosted.  I Hosted exactly one Elder because not many came in this week.  He ended up being in our Branch.  Elder Stahilee or something I just know it's pronounced Staley como Luke Staley.  That como wasn't actually on purpose, but I decided to leave it.  It means like.  Anyways after that we went back and they had them--but Elder Head wasn't there so we had to wait 20 minutes for him.  It was terrible.  But it was worth it.  Unfortunately I forgot my camera.  Afterwards Elder Morrey and I went to the BYU laundry place to get pants fixed.  We got to see a few freshman because it was Wednesday, but no one we knew.
It's really inconvenient trying to pack when you have to wait until the day before because that is the only day you can do laundry.  We tried to do as much as we could, but most of our stuff we needed still.  It'll work out though.  The Temple was great today.  You'll be happy to know, Mother, that I did the last name today.  Other than that we have studied and done our laundry today.
Porutguese mistake of the week.  The Sisters were trying to say that the members will support you to their investigator.  They used the verb suportar which more directly translates to They will put up with you.  It was muito engracada.  Unfortunately I can't add accents or anything like that so that word won't work in google translate.
I would like to thank everyone for all the support and letters I have received. I love you all and miss you all.  I am doing my best to keep up with the writing back, but missionaries don't have much time these days.  Something to do with the economy or something like that.
We have no clue what's going on in the world it's kind of funny.  We went to the front desk and saw an old newspaper that said "Steve Job resigns" and it was just really funny how we have no idea about stuff like that.
We committed Arnarldo to a baptismal date this week.  That was an exciting accomplishment.  We have also received many compliments on our portuguese from natives that are here.  It is so crazy that we can already say pretty much anything we want in one way or another.  The Lord has really blessed and the new program is truly inspired.  I have already taught way more than 50 lessons here.  I am so excited to start teaching real people.  No matter where.  The exciting thing is not learning portuguese, but teaching people how the gospel can bless their lives and family.  I have seen a true change in myself.  When I hear about some kind of problem I immediately think how the gospel could help them.  Christ knows and loves each one of us.  Our Heavenly Father loves us and has a plan for us.  This plan is the Plan of Salvation and only through this plan and our Savior Jesus Christ can we return and live with them and with our families forever.  The Book of Mormon is true and Joseph Smith was a prophet.  Thomas S. Monson is our prophet today.  Christ still lives and is the head of this church.
I love you all and miss you.  Thank you for all the prayers on my behalf.  I pray for you all every day.
Love you too,
Elder Reeve Sudweeks
PS family I will try and call while I'm in the airport waiting tomorrow morning.  I have no idea what time, but between 5 and 8:45

Reassignment

Elder Reeve Sudweeks has been temporarily reassigned to the Illinois, Chicago mission, and will be flying there Tuesday, the 30th (I think that's the date that matches that Tuesday).

His new address will be:
Elder Reeve Sudweeks
Illinois, Chicago Mission
1319 Butterfield  Rd, Ste 522
Downers Grove, IL 60515

Several of the other Brazilian visa waiters were reassigned as well to places like Philadelphia, PA (2 missionaries), and Billings, MT (4).  Reeve is the only one he knows of going to Chicago.  One of his district got his visa today.

Only one more week in the MTC

8/22/2011

Oi!
Como vao?  Eu estou muito bem e eu estou muito animado para minha reassignment este Quarta-feira.  Once again I would like to thank you all for the support and letters.  They are all so great and I love getting them and reading them.  I do apologize if it takes me a little to respond.  I am a little behind.  This week we hosted the new missionaries.  My district was one of the ones that helped take suitcases and show the new missionaries their rooms and classrooms.  We've been asked to do it again this Wednesday.  But right before we do that we get our reassignments which is extremely exciting.  My three guesses: St. George, Ogden, or Denver.  I would love any of those way too much.  Actually I'm excited for anywhere, but my fingers are crossed for Jacksonville, Florida or Everrett, Washington.
We had Elders reassigned to Detroit, Pittsburgh, St. George, Baltimore, and Riverside, California this week.  Oh and Sister Doyle was reassigned to Temple Square.  She was surprisingly not happy about that.  Both Sister Smith and Sister Ricks are extrememly jealous.  Most of them left this morning so we woke up and saw them off at 4 in the morning.  Yeah I'm pretty tired today.  Exciting news for last night though.  Elder Hutchins said I was mumbling portuguese in my sleep last night though.  I'm pretty excited that the language is coming.  Hopefully I get to do my online portion in the next week.  There's 3 of us in my district who haven't including me and my companion.
I inherited the Branch Tie for my last week.  It's name is "The Shredder".  I have pictures.  It is possibly the most hideous, heinous tie I've ever seen in my life.  And it's becoming a little thread-bare.  I wore it one day.  Once I leave I'll pass it on.
Yesterday we had movie night and we had a lack of chairs so I sat cross legged on the floor the whole time.  I didn't realize it, but my leg fell completely asleep.  When i tried to move and get up.  Nothing happened.  I fell and almost hit my head on the table.  I was fine though.  Elder Morrey helped me up and I just sat it out waiting for it to go back to normal.
One of the Elder's twin brother came in this week.  He's going to Brazil also, but he's not in our branch.  He does live in our building though.  We're getting 10 new Elders this week and 2 new Sisters.  We're pretty excited.  Most for the Sisters, but it's always fun to have new missionaries in our branch.
with our investigators this week we taught Arnaldo and Rosa.  We have a baptismal date with Rosa after our second visit.  Arnaldo is harder.  Irma Jacobs is back which is great.  It's funny because she gets mixed up with english all the time.  The other day she told us that in portuguese the adjectives always come first then realized her mistake and fixed it, but we were all thoroughly confused for a second.  She learned english on her mission in Brazil from her american companions.
We met an Elder from Rio de Janeiro this week.  He came into our class and talked to us for a bit.  He's going somewhere Spanish speaking.  I forget.  he had such a strong accent though.  A Rio one with lots of Sh's.  Hard to explain.
It's hard trying to get everything done like dry cleaning, haircuts, and all that stuff before we leave.  There are so many missionaries.  We get a four minute phone call this week.  I'm going to aim for Thursday from about 5-6.  That area.  So stand waiting by at the home phone if you could, please.  I don't have lots of time and I'd like to talk to you all.  I have to welcome our new missionaries after that.  It's my job.
I miss you all and I'm sorry I'm not a faster typer.  have fun guessing where I'm going.  Thank you for all the letters and prayers.  I love and miss you all.  The church is true and Jesus Christ lives.  I testify that God love each and every one of us.
  Love you too,
Elder Reeve Sudweeks

Week whatever I'm in (7)

7/15/2011

Oi!
Como vao? Eu estou muito bem aqui en o CTM.  Eu estou muito animado ainda.  I really appreciate hearing from all of you.  It's very encouraging  and I feel the love.  I love to hear how all of you have been doing.  I am sorry if I miss some of your questions though i do try, but it's hard to remember everything.
Elder Morrey and I taught a 19 year old girl in the TRC this week.  I don't remember her name, but she taught so so so fast.  Our teacher was even astonished by how fast she talked.  Fortunately we were able to understand most of what she was saying.  Her mother is from Brazil and her father served his mission there.  She lived there for a couple years and went on and on about how beautiful Curitiba and the temple there is.  I'm excited.  Everyone I've talked to that has been there says it's a little cool, but most of them are Brazilian and cool for them isn't quite the same.  It was an excellent lesson.  We taught her as herself about receiving revelation through scripture study.  She gave us excellent reviews which was flattering.  She is also living In Pleasant Grove.
Funny things this week include me talking to someone in english and asking "how many weeks do you have here?"  That is how you would phrase it in portuguese and it translated into my english.  We also took some pretty good pictures the last couple days which should be coming shortly. Elder Morrey tried to say campo or field and said comma, the thing used when writing.
Our teacher has been out of town with her mother that is here from Brazil and because of this we have had subs.  We teach the subs as themselves and the lessons are great.  it's very different teaching returned missionaries, but it helps us.  Elder Chavez made one Sister cry because his comment was what she needed to hear.  It's crazy how spirit lead missionaries can be when they are teaching.  We also got a new investigator named Arnaldo.  He's awesome, but he has a problem with smoking.  His whole family is members and we teach him for the third time today.
I don't know if Martha has left because I haven't seen her in a week.  Sister Proctor is one sly Sister.  Hopefully I see her before she leaves.  i took pictures with Elder Bryant yesterday after the devotional.  It was good to have more time to talk before he leaves me here for another 2 weeks.  We get our reassignments a week from Wednesday.  It's an exciting time, but it's weird that it's getting close to the end.  It seems like just yesterday I got here and at the same time I swear I have been here forever.
Yesterday was Sunday which was good.  Sister Smith from my district gave an excellent talk in church.  It was so busy though.  First a meeting with the branch presidency, then sacrament meeting, then branch council, then leadership training, then priesthood, then lunch, an interview with the branch president, temple walk, district meeting, then interviewing district leaders, then building meeting, then dinner, then finally a little personal time, then devotional, then pictures, then movie night, then planning, then more pictures, then bed time.  that was my whole day.
i love you all and miss you dearly.  Sorry about the capitilization this keyboard is semi broken and I'm typing fast.  Elder Bryant is here and says hi.  Elder Morrey says hi too.  My testimony is really growing and I'm working hard.  Constantly tired.
Love you all,
Elder Sudweeks
